Ash Community Speaker Series -- Resistance, Repression, Responsiveness: Workers and Change in China

Date:

Friday, February 23, 2018, 12:00pm to 1:15pm

Location:

Ash Center Foyer, 124 Mount Auburn St., Suite 200N

Join Manfred Elfstrom, China Public Policy Postdoctoral Fellow, AY16-18, for a discussion about how rising labor activism is transforming the Chinese state in a contradictory manner. Specifically, Elfstrom will show how, under sustained pressure from below, the government is increasing its ability to control citizens, while at the same time saddling itself with new social commitments.

Lunch will be served.

The Ash Community Speaker Series features discussions with students, faculty, fellows, and alumni whose research or other academic work is supported by the Ash Center. The series is a forum to discuss new ideas, innovative work, and ongoing projects that are related to the Ash Center's mission to make the world a better place by advancing excellence and innovation in governance and public policy through research, education, and public discussion.
