Democracy in Chains: A Book Talk with Nancy MacLean

Date:

Monday, October 16, 2017, 12:00pm to 1:00pm

Location:

WCC 1010 Classroom, Harvard Law School
Nancy MacLean will give a talk on her new book Democracy in Chains: The Deep History of the Radical Right's Stealth Plan for America, which has been longlisted for the National Book Award and  focuses on the Virginia School of economic thought and particularly on the Public Choice theory of James M. Buchanan. MacLean places Buchanan within the context of the right-wing backlash to both the New Deal and school desegregation and argues that the economic policy goals of the Virginia School serve primarily to benefit the anti-democratic politics of America’s economic elites.

Co-sponsored by the Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation, Law and History Program, and Charles Hamilton Houston Institute.
