Q&A with Werner Herzog
Werner Herzog (“Grizzly Man,” “Fitzcarraldo”), regarded by many film aficionados as one of the most fascinating directors in the world, will be at the Coolidge Corner Theatre this Thursday for a pair of events. While the “Evening with Werner Herzog” fundraiser benefitting the nonprofit theatre is already sold out, Herzog will also take part in a Q&A earlier in the day following a screening of his 2016 documentary, “Into the Inferno.” (Thursday, Feb. 8 at 1 p.m.; Coolidge Corner Theatre, Brookline; $23; all ages)
Free Screening of “Idiocracy”
Mike Judge’s dystopian vision of a world that becomes progressively stupider struck a chord with audiences when it was released in 2006, and has enjoyed a cult following ever since. This Thursday, the Brattle will co-host a free screening of the film along with the Harvard Kennedy School, followed by a live recording of the This Week in Dystopia podcast featuring “Idiocracy” co-writer Etan Cohen. If you don’t want to wait in line for the free tickets distributed at the box office starting Thursday at 6 p.m., the Brattle will host a $10 screening on Friday night at 10 p.m. (Thursday, Feb. 8 from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.; Brattle Theatre, Cambridge; free; rated R)
All Gold Everything Beer Release Party
Looking for a place to watch the opening ceremonies of the 2018 Winter Olympics? Lamplighter Brewing is the place to be, as the Cambridge brewery will debut a special edition dry-hopped golden ale called All Gold Everything and will have just opened a newly finished section of its taproom to the public . The brewery will project the ceremonies on a big screen, and will have poke bowls from Manoa Poke Shop available from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. (Friday, Feb. 9 from 5 p.m. to 11:45 p.m.; Lamplighter Brewing, Cambridge; free; 21+)
The Boston Globe Travel Show
Doesn’t a vacation sound nice right about now? Check out The Boston Globe Travel Show, and you can find out lots of information from airlines, tourism boards, and travel agencies about great places to visit; get advice from Globe writers Meredith Goldstein and Christopher Muther; and learn about prize giveaways, including free vacations. You can also buy separate tickets for $35 to the travel show’s Northeast Craft Beer Festival, where you can sip on more than 100 beers from more than 40 different breweries. Valentine’s Weekend Run
You don’t have to have a sweetheart to run in this Valentine’s Day fun run along the Charles River — you might even fall into stride with a potential new beau, for all you know. Regardless of your relationship status, this free run from Boston Road Runners will have hot chocolate and cupcakes at the finish line, so everyone is guaranteed a sweet ending. Lunar New Year at the MFA
The Museum of Fine Arts will celebrate the Lunar New Year with free admission all day on Saturday. The museum will also have special events based on Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese traditions, like an interactive kung fu demonstration, a meditation workshop, and a lion dance performance. (Saturday, Feb. 10 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; free; all ages)
Beats and Flow
This dance and yoga flow is only for the ladies — no dudes allowed. The morning will start with a “vixen workout” that combines intervals and HIIT cardio in a dance fitness concept set to some of your favorite female artists. Local vendors will be selling things like hand-blown glasses, handmade jewelry, local art, and small potted plants that are perfect tokens of affection for the special person in your life. New England Boat Show
Whether you’re the type of person who is looking to own a boat or simply someone who wants to pretend that you’re sitting on a yacht somewhere in the Caribbean, the New England Boat Show is here to help. Plus, with boats that traditionally range anywhere in price from $1,000 to $2 million, there will be a boat for almost any bank account. “The Handmaid’s Tale”
Critics and audiences alike fell in love with the Hulu series “The Handmaid’s Tale,” based on the Margaret Atwood novel and set in a dystopian Cambridge. But have you seen the film adaptation that preceded the TV show? Stop by the Brattle (which really has a dystopian theme going on this weekend) to see the 1990 film, which stars Natasha Richardson (“The Parent Trap”), Faye Dunaway (“Bonnie and Clyde,” “Chinatown”), and Robert Duvall (“The Godfather,” “The Apostle”).
