Embedded in a Government Innovation Team: HKS Student Alex Lawrence Reimagines City Services
Ash Center Summer Fellow Alex Lawrence touring the Old State House in Boston

By Alex Lawrence

Ash Center Summer Fellow Alex Lawrence, MPP 2014, served in the Boston Mayor’s Office of New Urban Mechanics (MONUM) during the summer of 2013. In the slide presentation below, she reflects on her experience with Mayor Thomas Menino’s innovation team, where they design and pilot “high potential ideas with maximum public impact with minimal public cost.”

The presentation, Ten Innovations That Reimagine City Services: Boston’s Mayor’s Office of New Urban Mechanics, describes ten of MONUM’s best ideas, from new apps to promote civic engagement to a mobile City Hall truck that “serves city residents where they live, work, and play.”

Lawrence concludes with a recommendation for MONUM to expand its scope from operational innovations to policy innovations. “City government initiatives like MONUM are well-placed to extend their efforts in innovation and civic technology to tackling society’s more entrenched social problems.”
