David Allen

David Allen is a PhD candidate in International and Global History at Columbia University, having previously studied at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, and Harvard. His research explores the domestic foundations of American global power, and asks how the assumption of world leadership by the United States has interacted with the demands of democratic control. His dissertation, a history of the Foreign Policy Association, charts efforts to educate the American people about world affairs, and moves between the state, philanthropic foundations, and activists to break down boundaries between transnational, national, and local history.

A beneficiary of Columbia’s American Historical Association-Mellon Career Diversity Pilot Program, he has been a freelance classical music critic for The New York Times, and his writing on music has also appeared in Gramophone magazine.
