Vietnam Program Internship

Applications are now open for the summer of 2022 internship and are due by March 5, 2022.

This year, the Vietnam Program at the Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation will support one first-year MPP, MPA, or MPA/ID student for an internship at the Fulbright School of Public Policy and Management (FSPPM) in Vietnam for eight weeks during the summer of 2022. The internships will support the research of faculty associated with the Vietnam Program on land policy, rural poverty, environmental issues, industrial policy, infrastructure, urbanization, and other macroeconomics/trade issues affecting Vietnam. During their stay in Vietnam, interns will work under the auspices of FSPPM with the guidance of faculty affiliated with the Program.

We envision that the graduate summer research intern will work with the research team at FSMMP on the following projects:

Project 1: Natural Capital Management: The Mekong River Delta region and Vietnam today faces ever-changing conditions, dealing with the impacts of multiple pressing issues. Rapid economic development at the expense of the environment has resulted in severe environmental pollution. Increasing reliance on fossil fuels for the energy sector, universal use of private transport, and poor urban planning have caused tremendous pressure on air quality, water quality, and public health. In addition, urbanization is happening rapidly, with a rising flow of people from rural areas to urban cities to find jobs. Yet, urban planning and supporting infrastructure are lagging. These problems are especially severe in the Mekong River Delta where the low terrain and susceptibility to climate change adds an extra dimension of challenge to its long-term development prospect. This project will explore the most severe natural resource challenges facing the region, analyze them, and communicate them to the public, policymakers, and other stakeholders to take proper actions.

Project 2: Thua Thien Hue Provincial Planning: Thua Thien Hue is one of five provinces in the Central key economic region of Vietnam; it is also the only ancient capital that is still relatively intact is Vietnam. Thua Thien Hue is rapidly developing a Provincial Plan for the period 2021-2030, with a vision that by 2050 the province will comply with national socio-economic strategies and plans. The Plan will be an essential legal tool to direct the management and administration of the socio-economic development of the Province in the coming period. This project will provide research and recommendations on primary strategic directions such as balancing between economic growth and heritage conservation, attracting labor, seeking growth drivers, selecting spearhead industries, allocating resources among economic sectors.
