On Purpose: How and Why to Pursue a Life in Public Service Today

With perpetually low trust in politicians, government, and other core institutions of national life, as well as in policy experts and expertise generally, what does it mean to be a public servant in today’s world? In short, why and how should one pursue a life in public service, and what makes for an effective public servant and a successful career? How should both future and current public servants plan for the nation’s future and their role in it?
Harvard ID holders are invited to a candid discussion with Zayn Siddique, who served as Principal Deputy Director for the White House Domestic Policy Council, advising President Biden, members of his Cabinet, and other senior Administration officials on housing, education, labor, rural development and anti-poverty policy. In addition to his government service, Siddique has extensive experience preparing political candidates for debates, including Vice President Kamala Harris in 2020, and served as a law clerk at all three levels of the federal court system, including to Justice Elena Kagan of the U.S. Supreme Court. Former White House advisors and current Allen Lab Fellows Ami Fields-Meyer and Alex Pascal will moderate this conversation on Siddique’s path to public service and the White House and the meaning and value of public service in America today.
