Malaaz Ghandour

Roy and Lila Ash Scholarship in Democracy Recipient

Malaaz Ghandour graduated from Harvard College in 2019 with a concentration in Government, a secondary in African Studies, and a Language Citation in Spanish. Malaaz has a wide range of political experience, including interning in Lima, Peru with the Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance. Malaaz went on to work in United States politics and government by campaigning with Congressman Jamie Raskin, interning for Senator Ed Markey, and working for Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher as a staff assistant and internship coordinator. Malaaz also has experience in education. She has taught students from underserved, marginalized communities in the Boston and Cambridge area in Massachusetts and later went on to work as a long-term substitute teacher for Pre-K and Kindergarten special education in her hometown of Houston with the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District.

As a first-generation Sudanese American, Malaaz’s background influenced her decision to focus on human rights law and policy for her graduate studies. Malaaz will be starting her J.D. at Georgetown University Law Center the following academic year as part of the current degrees program with the Harvard Kennedy School. After graduating from the Kennedy School and Georgetown Law, she hopes to continue working on issues surrounding human rights both domestically and internationally.
