Reimagining Democracy Program

Nick Chedli Carter is the Director of Democracy Initiatives at the Harvard Kennedy School’s Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation. He collaborates with a diverse range of scholars and practitioners to develop research, ideas, and community initiatives aimed at enhancing the foundations and practices of 21st-century democracy.

He is the founding director of the civic incubator Resilient Democracy and has held senior positions in numerous electoral and issues advocacy campaigns, including the presidential campaigns of US Senator Bernie Sanders and Hillary for America in 2016. Additionally, he served as the Director of Advocacy for VICE Media and worked in public affairs for Planned Parenthood of Northern New England.

Nick is a participant in the U.S. State Department Exchange Program – Young Turkey, Young America – and has engaged in international service work in Cambodia. He is an Americorps alumnus, where he helped launch Common Good Vermont assisting rural nonprofits, and was a community media producer for CCTC Center for Media & Democracy.

He earned a degree in Political Science from the University of Vermont and also pursued studies in comparative politics and economics at the University of Sussex, UK.

Nick is particularly interested in exploring the dynamics between emerging technologies, civic identities, demographic shifts, and cultural changes. His focus is on advancing meaningful civic participation, fostering more effective governance, and broadening the scope of those who drive and benefit from the increasing technicalization of civil society.
